Jules Bianchi

Jules Bianchi (August 3, 1989 – July 17, 2015) was a French racing driver who competed in Formula One for the Marussia team. His career was tragically cut short due to a severe accident during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.

  • Early Career: Bianchi started his racing career in karting and quickly progressed through the ranks, winning the French Formula Renault 2.0 championship in 2007 and the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2009. He was also a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy and served as a test driver for Ferrari and Force India.

  • Formula One: He entered Formula One in 2013 with Marussia. His performances were generally well-regarded, particularly his ninth-place finish at the 2014 Monaco Grand Prix, which was Marussia's first and only points finish in F1.

  • 2014 Japanese Grand Prix Accident: During the rain-affected 2014 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, Bianchi's car aquaplaned off the track and collided with a recovery vehicle that was attending to Adrian Sutil's Sauber, which had crashed at the same location a lap earlier. He sustained a severe diffuse axonal injury to his brain.

  • Death: Bianchi remained in a coma for nine months following the accident. He passed away on July 17, 2015, at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice, becoming the first Formula One driver to die from injuries sustained during a race since Ayrton Senna in 1994.

  • Legacy: Following his death, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) retired his racing number, 17, from use in Formula One. The incident also led to improvements in safety regulations, including the introduction of the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) system, designed to slow down the field during incidents requiring marshal intervention. He is remembered as a talented and promising driver who was on the cusp of a great career.
